CT can be used to try to locate a parathyroid adenoma when neck exploration has failed to identify either a tumour or hyperplasia, or if hypercalcaemia recurs after surgery. This CT scan shows an ectopic parathyroid adenoma Iying immediately to the left of the oesophagus. There is nm enhancement following the injection of intravenous contrast medium.
